XML Helper Problem - "Undefined variable: xml"

Hi,

(Cake 1.2)
I'm trying to implement an XML view for my controller, using the XML
helper, however whenever I invoke something like:
pr($xml->serialize($data));

I get a message: "Undefined variable: xml"

I've tried including the helper in my controller and also tried the
Routing technique which automatically invokes the xml helper and in
both instances get the same message. (I also tried copying the xml
helper file from the cake/libs folder to my app's /views/helper folder
and this also doesn't help)

I guess the real question is: How do I know if Cake has loaded a given
helper (a PR dump of $this does show 'Xml' in the list of helpers) and
how can I go about debugging this problem.
