Authentication using REMOTE_USER as username.

Basically, I'm new to cakePHP/MVC but not PHP itself. I'm thinking
about moving an application I wrote some time ago over to cakePHP, but
haven't been able to figure out quite the best way to do the
following:

The application currently authenticates off the university's ID
service (via an apache module) which handles the authentication, and
sets the username in the $_SERVER['REMOTE_USER'] variable.

What I'd like to do ideally, would be to have cakePHP Auth handle the
specific permissions within the application - whether a user has
permissions for x, y and z - via a database, but have the identity
check done externally.

Therefore I don't really need a login page or password (since the id
has been checked and assured), I just need cake's auth to take the
REMOTE_USER variable, check that user exists in this application, and
then handle its permissions as appropriate.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of being able to solve
this?

Thanks,

J
