why sometimes i have to specify the field name otherwise i won't get the resule?

Time to time I need to specify the fields; otherwise i wont' get the
result or empy result.

$employee = $this -> Employee -> find( 'first', array( 'fields' =>
array( 'first_name', 'last_name' ), 'conditions' =>
array( 'Employee.accounts_id' => $uid ) ) );

if it's for "first" i need to specify the fields?
