I use a custom validation rule which completes the schema and maks the
url always the same (adding trailing slash, http:// etc).
you could also modify the url in beforeValidate().
this way you would get the result you are looking for.

BUT you should know that www.url and url do not necessarily need to be
the same and have the same content.
if you automatically add www. if missing in some rare cases this could
result in a inappropriate validation.
