It uses ORM, and it normally connects to RDBMS.   What Object-Relational database system are you referring to?

Cakephp is very flexible.  From the configuration documentation:

Examples: mysql, postgres, sqlite, pear-drivername, adodb-drivername, mssql, oracle, or odbc. Note that for non-database sources (e.g. LDAP, Twitter), leave this blank and use "datasource".
