You could try something like this, it probably won't work as written,
but it might give you a starting point.
Router::connect(
'/items/:colour/:item/:number',
array('controller' => 'items', 'action' => 'index', 'number' => null),
array(
'colour' => '\w+',
'item' => '\w+',
'number' => '\d+'
)
);
