PDO Error on new installation

I've just installed Cake and tried running the default index.php, after taking care of a few missing directories I received the following Error Message.

Error:  Class 'PDO' not found

File:    /usr/lib/Cake/Model/Datasource/Database/Mysql.php

Line:   169

I've checked the PHP set up using phpinfo() and I can see that the ./configure command use --disable-pdo I assume this is why I get the error above.

Any suggestions on how I can get PDO working?
