The people who create jQuery say progressive enhancement is the best way to use jQuery. It's simple and maintainable, you build your app without any jQuery from the start. Then once your app works with pure html you sprinkle on jQuery. One of the best frontend resources I've been reading lately is

I recommend reading the mobile first article and dissecting the shopping cart app.

Also, checking out companies like www.happycog.com (alistapart) and www.seesparkbox.com and other frontend thinking companies, I'll plug an Aussie company too while I'm at it www.wavedigital.com.au (sitepoint, learnable)

www.frontendmasters.com, www.codeschool.com have passionate teachers who have really made learning about modern frontend easy.

Built my first mobile first app last week and it was easier than I thought using progressive enhancement and the resources above.
