There's no CakePHP dependencies in the below code - when you try to use it outside CakePHP does it work?

Curl error code 56 says: Failure with receiving network data.

I expect you need to dig deeper, it may in some way be CakePHP related - but from what you've shown so far it doesn't seem likely.
