Running sql queries in cake

hello i am new to cakephp
i am using cakephp 1.3
i need to run the following query,
$max=$this->Question->query("select max(qset) from questions where category_id = ".$this->Session->read('categoryid')." ;");

but its not fetching any values...

should i call anything like executeQuery as we do in normal php..
please rectify the error
