Agreed. I did an Access to MySQL conversion in a similar way. Import as is into a MS SQL db, then export as an sql file, import into a staging MySQL db and then do whatever manipulation is needed there. Then you can move it into your main db or do whatever fits best. Sounds a bit manual and long winded but at least I had control and knew exactly what was happening to my data.
