canceling action execution in the controller.

Hi all. I am  an noobe here.I want to be able to cancel an action before its execution.The scenario is as follows. I have a navifgation bar. When I press a link I check if the current URL is the same as that of the link.If it is I want to prevent the controller to execute the action which renders the view for that link.
