> sudo mkdir /var/run/mysqld
> cd /var/run/mysqld
> sudo ln -s /opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock mysqld.sock
Creating a symlink to the socket is a poor workaround. Instead, either tell your mysql server to create the socket where php is expecting it (edit the my.cnf) and then restart mysqld, or change php so it looks for the socket where it already is (edit the php.ini) and then restart your web server.
