I guess my mistake was getting a book on it.

You did probably not understand the concept of the CakePHP framework. You never try to access the view files directly and you never access a model directly from the browser. You can read the basic principles of CakePHP here: http://book.cakephp.org/view/892/Basic-Principles-of-CakePHP
