CakePHP - separating into stand-alone libraries (especially Models)?

Hi,

Many of my current projects have existing frameworks, so there's no way I can move them all over to Cake. However, I'd love to be able to pick and choose libraries / modules in Cake, and use them in other projects - specifically the model layer, which is way better for me than Doctrine and Propel, and (imho) shouldn't have too many dependencies on the rest of the Cake core.

If Cake were to be more modular in this way, I think it would help drive uptake and profile of the project - for example, Zend components and SF2 components are often used in other open source projects and libraries-  for example Drupal moving to use SF2 components - and I think this has been an important contributor to their popularity.

Is there any intention to move Cake in this direction?
And has anyone ever tried using Cake's model layer outside of the full framework? Any hints?

Thanks in advance!
