Thank you! That link confirmed for me that I needed to use public $useTable = 'topics'; in my new model (which, per Albert's suggestion below, I named TopicsTree). Then the I had to consistently change my controller name to TopicsTreeController and all my references to database fields in the controller and views to TopicTree.title, TopicTree.reference, etc.
It worked! Again, thank you.
