I went into all the files relative to the Helper, included the helper itself, and closed the <?php tag. That is, when you use bake script to write your files, it doesn't close the tag. Went to the controller, the helper and the view, made sure the ?> was at the end and that was it. May be there was some other file involved and I forgot, just did it last night and I'm writting this from memory, please check it before you blame this "solution".
Hope this helps.

Could you go a bit deeper on what you did? I'm struggling with this issue and can't get the short tags to work.--
