For complex links you can use the $this->Html->url() function...

$url=$this->Html->url(array('controller'=>'news','action'=>'view','slug'=>'news_one'));

?>

<a href="<?PHP echo $url; ?>">

    <span class="title">Title of news here</span>

    <span class="image"><img src="/path/to/image.jpg" alt="Alternative text" /></span>
