As a best practice, should a helper output content or return the content to the View?

In other words, should the call to the helper be:
$this->MyHelper->someMethod($DataForHelper);

or

echo $this->MyHelper->someMethod($DataForHelper);

Most of the built in helpers seem to prefer the latter form.  Is this just a style issue or is there a preferred way?
