index.php not found?

I have noticed that when I uncomment the line in the Apache httpd.conf file:

#LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

I no longer get the CakePHP welcome page indicating that I have configured mod_rewrite incorrectly but I get a 404 indicating that index.php is not present (it is, because if I comment the line as above I get the CakePHP welcome message again). Ideas?
