i agree. If you'd like to do the "honor", i think you have a clearer grasp of what's happening in the background. i just know it's not happening as advertised.
As for getting the primary Listings record to save, i'll follow up when i get home with the configuration that gets that far, but nothing i've done gets the ListingsAttributes record to work.

Saving works fine with using the _ids, but as soon as I add join data to the mix, it refuses to save with validation errors.
Also, if I include the entire Attribute entity, and remove the validation of attribute_id and listing_id from listings_attributes, I can get the attributes to save, but the _joinData still does not save. It is obviously not working as advertised.
Also, I looked for test cases in the test code and found none.
It appears that it is time to write it up as a bug...
