Oh yeah, I just assumed you were using the Tree behavior.

If you are not, I highly recommend it: http://book.cakephp.org/2.0/en/core-libraries/behaviors/tree.html

It gives you much more flexibility and optimizes your database requests and ensures more data integrity.
