Re: Defining root directory for shared hosting

You should NOT need to change anything in the file app/index.php. You have not given enough information about you installation for us to help. For instance, where (in relation to your webserver document root) did you put CakePHP. If you did a standard installation and put it in the document root directly, just go to <domain_name> and you should see the the CakePHP welcome screen. It will tell you from there what needs to be done next (like setting up your database connection).

If you don't see the welcome screen, and given that you are on a shared server, you probably don't have mod_rewrite configured on the server correctly. Try looking here: http://book.cakephp.org/2.0/en/installation/url-rewriting.html

The installation instructions at http://book.cakephp.org/2.0/en/getting-started.html are really very good and you should follow them. BTW, they say nothing about modifying app/index.php. Follow the instructions and you will get it done.
