Use the id attribute of the model after a save

if ($this->Model->save()) {

    $id = $this->Model->id;

    // redirect with this id now

}

My application saves to the db and then forward the user to a page that needs the id of the newly saved product.

In my saveAfter method in the model im able to get the id, but how do i pass it back to my method in time to be used in the redirect?

if anyone could shed some light would be great.
