I don't think it supports plugin notation right now, please open a ticket. It definitely seems like something we need to support

If I put the same/similar in the AppController of the plugin it does not work. Am I missing something or it is a bug/oversight/feature

For theming it would be infinitely better if this worked from the AppController of the Plugin
