Thanks very much for that Shadow6363, it was very enlightening. I had
just a further question, where do you handle the redirect to the login
page? If I put the following in the app/webroot/.htaccess:

AuthType <type>
Require valid-user

I then get 404s every time I try to open the cakePHP application.
Should I be putting the auth section within my controllers in cake, or
can it go in the .htaccess?
