I believe I need to use all rows because the query runs a HABTM and each record needs to be checked for a range match in the search.

I rectified the memory issue by adding a php memory config to my .htaccess file to 64MB.

The server is only running 1MB RAM.. and there are about 26 sites on it. The system does not seem optimal for a CakePHP style framework, but it works - just a bit slow to load at times.
