Alternatively, you can try to install it via cake shell:

https://github.com/dereuromark/PHPUnit-Cake2 

from your app dir

...app>cake Phpunit.Phpunit install

I followed the steps below:

pear upgrade PEAR pear config-set auto_discover 1 pear install pear.phpunit.de/PHPUnit

After which it shows 
$ which phpuni
/usr/bin/phpunit

$ phpunit -v
PHP Warning:  require_once(File/Iterator/​Autoload.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/lib/php/PHPUnit/Autoload.​php on line 45
PHP Fatal error:  require_once(): Failed opening required 'File/Iterator/Autoload.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php/​PHPUnit:/usr/lib/pear') in /usr/lib/php/PHPUnit/Autoload.​php on line 45

pear list doesn't show that PHPUnit was installed.

What could be the problem?
