I was looking around and found this page http://joykapoor.wordpress.com/2013/01/09/authcomponent-variables-in-cakephp/
It seems that you can have your own isAuthorized() function in your user model and it will call it once it determines you are a valid user. I am going to give that a shot and see if it will do what I need. Thanks.
