can't send a email using default cake php email component

hi,

im new to php. I tried to send a mail using existing code in cake php mannual. bt it doesnt give an error and not send the email.

so I want to know,
              can't send a email using default cake php email component to gmail account?
              is there any configurations to send the mail in somewhere?(like php.ini)

I used following versions!
             
Apache Friends XAMPP (Basis Package) version 1.7.2
Apache 2.2.12 (IPV6 enabled)
MySQL 5.1.37 (Community Server)
 PHP 5.3.0 + PEAR
