You're right, it appears I let myself get misled a bit by the Chrome debugger. We are using database sessions, which despite still making calls to session_start() seem to be immune to the issue. The request times I'm getting from my DebugKit logs are all coming in at reasonable lengths.
The serialization issue must be client side then, I'll have to dive into this further.
