[php_mysql] Proprietary data types and portability

Hello,
I would like to ask you some opinion about data types and portability:
managing flags into a MySQL databases I found really useful the SET type,
which is somehow a substitute of an INT field on which it is possible
operating with bit-to-bit operators.

The problem of the SET data type is that it is not an SQL standard, so I was
wondering about all the problems involved in chosing a proprietary format.

Though some feedbacks changed my view about portability (e.g.

reach a point.
Have you some useful suggestion or experience to share regarding it?

Thanks.
