component vs component's controller

Could you briefly explain what is the difference using components vs using controllers of the component? 

I cannot understand what should I do in order to use a function I created in the controller, which is a part of plugin. 

While I can access the component's functions I don't know how to access controllers.

Should it be done by construct and $this->controller?
