slugroute parse() with dot in URL

I am using a SlugRoute custom class and the username i use has a dot. For example, localhost/firstname.lastname is my url. The problem is the parse() method does not parse after the dot. So i am only seeing a partial url (localhost/myname). I am using cake 2.6. I am following this tutorial: http://mark-story.com/posts/view/using-custom-route-classes-in-cakephp
